4A State Championship Outlook: Who Owns the 8-Lap Grind?

Girls’ Preview: Securing the Bag vs. The Union Powerhouse

Bonney Lake’s senior star Latham West will be out for blood in the 3200m. She enters the postseason as the definitive favorite, and with this being her final high school race at the distance, expect her to leave absolutely nothing in the tank. Look for West to make a violent, aggressive move from the gun to establish a punishing pace designed to wear down the rest of the field.

To secure the gold, West will need to remain laser-focused to overcome the formidable one-two punch of Union’s Ella Koch and Sara Thompson. The Union duo thrives on pack-running tactics, often feeding off one another to drive fast times, and they will undoubtedly look to share the top spots on the podium. Behind that lead trio is Curtis’ Charlotte White, a highly talented sophomore who is a constant fixture in the lead pack mix. Kate Westfall out of Camas rounds out the top five and will need to execute a flawless, high-octane race to hang with the leaders as the attrition sets in.

Boys’ Preview: The Sub-9 Showdown

Isaac Benjamin of South Kitsap competes in the 3200m at the Jesuit Twilight Relays. Benjamin is a top contender heading into the 2026 WIAA State Track and Field Championships at Mt Tahoma High School in Tacoma, WA. Photographed by Russell Moore.

The 4A boys' 3200m is shaping up to be a true showcase of national-level talent. South Kitsap’s Isaac Benjamin established himself as the man to beat after a blistering 8:47.19 in the elite heats at the Arcadia Invitational. He comes in as the heavy favorite, but Cohen Butler of Camas and Olympia freshman Quenton Lanese—who have both joined the prestigious sub-9-minute club this year—are not going to let him ride off into the sunset without a brutal fight.

Quenton Lanese of Olympia High School competes in the 3200m at Olympia High School. Lanese is a top contender heading into the 2026 WIAA State Track and Field Championships at Mt Tahoma High School in Tacoma, WA. Photographed by Russell Moore.

Cohen Butler of Camas High School competes in the 3200m race at the South Sound Classic. Butler is a top contender heading into the 2026 WIAA State Track and Field Championships at Mt Tahoma High School in Tacoma, WA. Photographed by Russell Moore.

Butler and Benjamin have lined up against one another numerous times, creating a tense familiarity, but Lanese acts as the wild card. The Olympia freshman will be looking to break up the established senior hierarchy and force his own rhythm on the race. Mead’s Stejer Franklin and Battle Ground’s Lord King Nana-Badu-Weah sit dangerously close in the four and five spots, separated by a microscopic .34 seconds. If the front three attempt a breakaway, expect an incredibly scrappy, high-stakes tactical war behind them for the remaining podium positions.
