The 20-Minute Headshot: Creating Calm in the Chaos at Browsers Books

Seattle traffic is undefeated.

I was just packing up to head out when the email pinged: Amir was loaded up and hitting the road, but the PNW traffic gods demanded a sacrifice. His trip was going to take double the time. He was going to be late—significantly late. I assured him it was fine, told him to drive safe, and headed into downtown Olympia to wait.

I took my time getting to Browsers Bookshop. When I walked in, I let the person at the counter know who I was, and she was already well aware of why I was there. It’s small community moments like that—being welcomed into a space to create—that I really appreciate.

The Setup

Once upstairs, I scoped out the area. This was my second time shooting at Browsers. The first time, I went minimal with a single key light. But knowing the upstairs can get a little dim, I decided to let a second light tag along this time.

I sat on the floor, hunkered down beside a Christmas tree, waiting for Amir. Honestly? I felt like a kid on Christmas morning unwrapping presents. I set up the gear, and once the area cleared of customers, I fired off a few test shots to dial in the positioning and power.

I knew instantly that bringing that second light was the right call. The mood was there.

The Crunch

Then, Amir arrived. He had been battling traffic for hours, dragging a large suitcase, and looked understandably frazzled. I pointed him toward the bathroom to change and checked my watch.

Closing time.

We had exactly 30 minutes before the store shut down.

Internal panic? Maybe a little. But I looked at Amir. He was already stressed from the drive and the delay. If I panicked, the photos would show it. So, I took a deep breath. We just needed to be efficient.

I told him about the time crunch, we quickly cleared a table, and I had him sit. While he was still pulling his ensemble together—adjusting his cuffs, fixing his jacket—I snapped a few test frames.

The Hunch Paid Off As often happens, that "test shot" of him getting ready ended up being one of the strongest images of the night. He wasn't posing; he was just existing. The lighting was dialed, the mood was right, and despite the rush, everything clicked.

Blue on Brick

We moved around that small space like a pit crew. We captured multiple looks, moving lights and changing angles, chatting the whole way to keep the energy up. We knocked out over 100 shots in less than 20 minutes.

Amir was an absolute champ. despite the stress of the arrival, he came prepared and well-dressed. We had planned the outfits ahead of time, and it paid off. His blue blazer popped incredibly well against the warm red brick of the Browsers' walls.

The Edit & The Wait

Post-production required a little magic. I had to clone out the Christmas tree, some book carts, and other retail distractions to get that clean, moody "executive" vibe we were going for, all while maintaining the texture that makes Browsers such a special location.

As I write this, I just sent the gallery off to Amir.

And now, the worst part of being a photographer begins: The Wait.

I haven't heard back yet. The silence always lets those little negative thoughts bounce around in my head. Did he like them? Did I miss something? But to be honest, I feel a bit differently about this shoot. The rush, the lighting, the location—it all worked. I’m excited for him to see them, and while I love them, I really hope he does too.
