THE LONGING FOR CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

Men’s Start Line : NXN 2024

I look forward to the next cross country season the moment the current one ends. There is something truly special about being out in nature, capturing the raw grit and beauty of the sport.

The last cross country race I covered was NXN (Nike Cross Nationals) – a sloppy, wet, and cold day that, despite the conditions, provided the perfect backdrop for some incredible moments. I was there, representing my passion for high school sports photography, and though I didn't feel entirely "up to the task" initially, once my nerves settled, I got to work. My final photo count may have been lower than usual, but I ended up with some of my favorite shots I've ever taken. It wasn’t easy between the relentless rain, a fogged-up viewfinder, numb fingers, and slippery ground, but I thrive on a good challenge.

After the race, I headed back to the car, changed into dry clothes, and raced home to upload my photos and relive the moments I had captured. Once my images found their way into the world, I had several athletes, coaches, and parents reach out to me. To hear their appreciation and to share a few messages back and forth is enough to make any race worth traveling for. Those connections are truly what I live for.

From the Mud Pit : Ultimook 2024

I am already circling the date for this year's Ultimook Race in Tillamook, OR on September 6, 2025. The race features an old-school course with a giant mud pit that is a lot of fun to watch the runners navigate. After spending time with the Central Kitsap High School and Curtis High School teams, taking photos at their summer practices, I am incredibly excited to see those athletes in action after witnessing their work ethic firsthand. You find out more about those practices over at West Coast XC.
