Mission: Community Recon – Taylor Ray’s Café
Product photography is all about highlighting the delicious, mouth-watering details. The way the caramel cascades down the sides of this iced latte makes it absolutely irresistible.
Part 1: Taylor Ray’s Café
Deploying a request on Reddit can sometimes feel like a daunting recon mission. However, my experience with the r/Olympia community has been consistently positive, and my posts are generally well-received. Recently, I reached out to local food and dining establishments with a specific objective: to partner with a local business for a high-value portfolio shoot.
OUTBOUND COMMUNIQUE
Hey r/olympia,
I’m a local commercial photographer, and I’m currently putting together a pitch to bid on a 2026 photography project. I want to add one more killer food & beverage shoot to my portfolio before the proposal deadline in early March.
Instead of just doing a staged test shoot, I want to partner with a real local food establishment and give the final assets back to the business for free.
What you get
A comprehensive commercial photography package (estimated $2,850 value). You will receive full commercial usage rights to the final edited photos to use for your website, social media, Google Maps, or marketing.
The timeline
Because my submission deadline is coming up fast, we would need to get this shoot done within the next 8-9 days (sometime before Feb 28th).
Who I'm looking for
Any local food establishment—whether you're a cafe, a food truck, a brewery, or a full-service restaurant. However, my studio operates on an equity model, so priority will absolutely go to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and Woman-owned businesses.
If you own a spot or know a business owner who could use a visual overhaul for their digital presence, please drop a comment below or shoot me a DM with the name of the business and your availability over the next week!
Let's make your place look amazing.
My studio operates on a "One-for-One" equity model, so I made it clear that priority for this $2,850 commercial package would go to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and woman-owned businesses. While I originally intended to lock in just one partner, I chose two that offered completely different culinary vibes and fit perfectly into the community categories I prioritize.
Easily the best part of the drive-thru window? The very good boys who come to visit. A wholesome morning moment captured in the gorgeous natural light during my commercial shoot.
K at Taylor Ray’s Café in Hawks Prairie reached out to me. K (they/them) manages the daily operations for the owner, who is blind. Taylor Ray’s fell right into the mission parameters I was looking for, and I was excited to get a behind-the-scenes look at their new location.
I was greeted by K in the early morning and spent some time scouting the dining room. It’s a cozy space, featuring a fireplace nook and ample natural light from surrounding windows. However, the shoot presented a tactical challenge: I found myself wedged into a corner near the office desk, working without artificial lighting.
Navigating the morning light at Taylor Ray's Café. This incredibly cozy corner is the perfect spot to sit back, enjoy a local coffee, and soak up the sun through those beautiful large windows.
I deployed my 300mm lens on a tripod and dropped the shutter speed to capture action shots of the espresso machine while keeping the focus tack-sharp. It required strategic editing to balance the highlights and shadows, but the results were worth the effort. Even though the environment was challenging, I walked away with standout shots that I’m proud to add to my portfolio. Being welcomed into a business space is a privilege, and I hope these assets serve Taylor Ray’s well.
